SAT Mathematics Test Prep Course

SAT Mean Scores by Sex & Ethnicity (College Board, 2010) indicate a grave problem in New York State: African American and Latina girls score significantly lower on the SAT Mathematics Test than other girls and all boys (see following table).
SAT Mean Scores by Sex & Ethnicitys
We at Helicon, Inc., the Mathematics Resource and Support Center for Females, believe that this situation is unacceptable and eminently rectifiable—which is why we will be offering a series of three free SAT Mathematics Test Prep Courses for 75 low-income African-American and Latina girls from Brooklyn in the Fall of 2011. It is expected that 75% of the girls who attend a Course will score at least 516 on their SAT Mathematics Tests. Higher SAT Math Scores will enable the girls to apply to/be accepted by better colleges and to be eligible for scholarships. With better math skills the girls will be equipped "to study subjects and participate in programs that train them for high-paying jobs, such as in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), which is essential for women to succeed and become better represented in the traditionally male-dominated STEM fields.” (The Economic Status of Women in New York State, New York Women's Foundation, 2008)
