SAT Mathematics Tests Prep Course

Helicon, Inc. has been selected to receive a one-year 2014 AAUW Community Action Grant for an SAT Mathematics Tests Prep Course for African-American and Latina High School Girls which will prepare participants for both the SAT Mathematics Test and the SAT Mathematics Subject Test, Level 1. The primary purpose of this initiative is to raise the SAT Math scores of the girls who attend by at least 100 points. (According to the College Board [2013 SAT Mean Mathematics Scores By Sex Within Ethnicity in New York State], African-American girls score 416 and Latinas score 428; the mean for all girls is 489 and the mean for all boys is 516.)  A higher SAT Math Test score will enable each girl to raise her sights (and eligibility) with respect to college applications and obviate the need for her to take any remedial math courses once she's in the college of her choice; indeed, a high SAT Mathematics Subject Test Score will prepare the girls for advanced mathematics and/or or mathematics-related college courses.  (We plan an unabashedly-heavy lobbying campaign throughout the Course: each girl will be strongly encouraged to minor in mathematics, no matter what she might be considering as a major.)

The first group of 25 girls (who will be seniors in a New York City Public High School the 2014 Fall Semester) will attend a Day of Remediation class in June, the Summer Female Math Course (in July/August), and the first SAT Mathematics Tests Prep Course on four Sundays in September; they will take the SAT Mathematics Test and the Mathematics Subject Test, Level 1 in October 2014.  This pattern will repeat itself six more times throughout the school year for SAT test dates in November and December of 2014, and in January, March, April and June of 2015—for a total of 175 girls.  Attendees will be required to furnish Helicon, Inc. with copies of all pre- and post-Course PSAT and SAT scores and copies of their junior and senior year report cards so that improvements in SAT scores, math course grades and Regents exams scores can be measured.

An SAT Mathematics Tests Prep Course Train-the-Instructor component will be developed throughout the year; and this will be available, along with other Course materials will be available sometime in the summer of 2015 (for a very nominal licensing fee) to organizations and (for free or very low cost) to individuals in the store on this website.
