SHSAT/TACHS Prep Course for African American and Latina Girls

The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) is, according to the New York City Department of Education, “the competitive, objective, and scholastic achievement examination used as the sole factor to determine admissions to eight of New York City’s nine Specialized High Schools.”

The SHSAT is taken in the fall of 8th or 9th grade.

A revised version of the SHSAT was introduced in 2017; and that version has itself been updated for 2019.
•  The English Language Arts, ELA, section (formerly the Verbal section), continues to contain reading comprehension passages and questions but, instead of scrambled paragraphs and logical reasoning questions, now include questions that address revising/editing skills.
• The Math section, while continuing to contain problems for which answers students may select from multiple choice options, now includes five problems that students must solve and provide the correct numerical answer.
• All multiple-choice questions (57 ELA and 52 Math) now have four answer choices instead of the previous five answer choices.
Testing time has increased from 150 minutes to 180 minutes.
