The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) is, according to the New York City Department of Education, "the competitive, objective, and and scholastic achievement examination used as the sole factor to determine admissions to eight of New York City's nine Specialized High Schools."
Students take the SHSAT in the fall of the 8th or 9th grade.
|
A revised version of the SHSAT was given for the first time in October 2017. |
The English Language Arts, ELA, section (formerly the Verbal section) will continue to contain reading comprehension passages and questions but, instead of scrambled paragraphs and logical reasoning questions, will now include questions that address revising/editing skills. |
The Math section, while continuing to contain problems for which answers student may select from multiple choice options, will now include five problems that students must solve and provide the correct numerical answer. |
All multiple choice questions (57 ELA and 52 Math) will now have four answer choices instead of the previous five. |
Testing time is increasing from 150 minutes to 180 minutes. |
Here's a copy of the 2017 – 2018 Specialized High Schools Student Handbook that the New York City Department of Education made available last summer. The 2018 – 2019 Handbook should be available next summer and Workshops should be scheduled so that parents and students can ask questions and speak to Specialized High Schools representatives.
